Mindfulness in Yin Yoga Evenings

Sarah Powers Yin yoga encourages long held floor poses to enhance the Chi or energy distribution through the Yin parts of the body, namely the bones and connective tissues that bind them. These mainly static postures coax Chi into the respective Meridians (the unseen riverbeds of energy the Chi travels through), thereby encouraging a kind of needle-less acupuncture treatment. This style of practice, done slowly and safely, nourishes the natural range of motion of the joints, which allows for more ease in sitting meditation postures. It also flushes the meridians housed in these connective tissues, which directly effect/enhance particular organs in the process. Restoring the flow of Chi within us has a direct impact on our psychological states, encouraging increased ease of being, a foundation for authentic meditation to occur.

Mindfulness is an attitude we adopt in which we let go of all motivations to manipulate the moment, developing the capacity to observe without willful interference. Yin Postures offer a potent atmosphere to train up this quality of attention, while sitting practice allows us to observe and open to the material that we habitually move away from, a well as open to a greater dimension of spaciousness. When practiced regularly together we have the potential to fully inhabit our bodies and minds throughout life’s changing circumstances.

Join us this winter and spring for weekly two hour evening classes at Deer Run Zendo. After a brief pranayama practice, Sarah will highlight an aspect of Mindfulness each week during the yin practice, ending each class with a 40 minute meditation. Please come with a basic understanding and interest in these stillness disciplines.
